Bellator Fighting Championships 49 was the introduction of the new welterweight tournament. Fight fans were able to view the preliminary fights via live stream on Facebook. The Main Card was aired on MTV2.
Steve Carl vs. Douglas Lima
Steve Carl (14-2) is a U.S. Army veteran, who has been plagued by injuries. Douglas Lima (18-4) comes from American Top Team. He has a recent win over UFC veteran Terry Martin.
Round 1 - Carl dazed Lima early in the first minute of the first round. Lima executed a nice sweep and punishing kick to finish the round.
Round 2 – The first half of the round was primarily on the ground. Lima is clearly more superior with his Jujitsu skills.
Round 3 – Lima is winning the exchanges in the stand up game, as well as on the ground. The fighters finish the bout with a back and forth stand up battle.
Decision – Douglas Lima wins by unanimous decision.
Luis Santos vs. Dan Hornbuckle
Luis Santos (49-6-1) is an eleven year mixed martial arts professional, who has fought in big organizations such as the WEC. He is a Brazilian Mauy Thai Champion, and a Jujitsu Black Belt. His opponent Dan Hornbuckle (22-4) has a recent victory over fellow tournament competitor Steve Carl. His last defeat was against the current champion Ben Askren.
Round 1 – Both men are noticeably large 170lb fighters with heavy hands. Santos lands a huge head kick on Hornbuckle late in the round.
Round 2 – Luis Santos displays excellent striking abilities in the match. His Jujitsu comes out, and he takes Hornbuckle to the ground. After a scramble, the fight returns to the feet.
Round 3 – The round starts out with a display of wild striking executed by Santos. When the fight goes to the ground, Santos stales to force the referee to return the action back to the standing position.
Decision – Luis Santos wins by unanimous decision.
Ben Saunders vs. Chris Cisneros
Ben Saunders (10-3-2) is a former UFC competitor, and a prior cast member of The Ultimate Fighter. Chris Cisneros (13-3) is from Hawaii and a new edition to Bellator.
Round 1 – Saunders starts the round with two explosive head kicks. He gets the takedown on Cisneros, and establishes full mount. Saunders continues the round by giving Cisneros a classic Jujitsu clinic.
Round 2 – Saunders again takes the fight to the ground, and executes several submission attempts. Moving to side mount, Saunders works his ground and pound.
Round 3 – Both fighters start the round off at a very fast pace. Saunders comes out on top of the exchange, and with vicious knees he puts Cisneros on the ground.
Decision - Saunders wins by TKO.
Chris Lazono – Brent Weedman
Chris Lazono (8-1) is known as an (T)KO specialist. He has been successful with his tenure in the Bellator Fighting Championships. His opponent Brent Weedman (18-6-1), has a Dutch style Muay Thai background, and is also notorious for his stand up.
Round 1 – Weedman begins the fight more dominate than his opponent. He knocks down Lazono with a right cross, scrambles, and then executes a huge slam. Weedman takes the back of Lazono, and holds position for the remainder of the round.
Round 2 – begins with powerful right hands from Lazono. Weedman is dazed, but continues to show heart, and push forward.
Round 3 – Lazono was clearly getting the best of Weedman’s stand up. Weedman, changed his game plan, and moved the fight to the ground. After a scramble, Lazono gets the advantage, and works some quality ground and pound.
Decision –Chris Lazono wins by unanimous decision.
